On March 30, the Kafue Gorge Lower Hpp Project  in Zambia, which was constructed and surveyed and designed by Northwest Institute in the form of a joint venture, held a power generation ceremony for unit 5. Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema personally unveiled the plaque and cut the ribbon and pressed the start button. All units of Kaifuxia will be put into operation.

During the construction of the project, the Northwest Research Institute actively promoted the transformation from Made in China to Created in China, innovatively designed and completed the "world's first surge well" with "seven holes and one well", developed strong protection, weak excavation, and less disturbance The key technology of green construction provides key technical support for the safe, high-quality, efficient and green construction of dams in confined spaces. The project adopts laser-controlled mechanical automatic leveling system and DAMS-IV intelligent distributed engineering safety monitoring system. The key technology of high-quality and high-efficiency roller compacted concrete dam construction has reached the international leading level; Compliments from renowned RCC dam experts.

The project’s roller compacted concrete high-quality and efficient dam key technology won the first prize of China Power Construction Science and Technology Award; the key technology of confined space rock mass utilization won the second prize of scientific and technological progress of the Chinese Society of Rock Mechanics and Engineering, and the China Construction Enterprise Management Association-Engineering Construction The second prize of the micro-innovation technology competition; the structural design of "seven holes and one well" super-large-diameter heterogeneous surge well won the national authorized patent. In the construction of the project, it has successively won 5 provincial and ministerial science and technology progress awards, 13 provincial and ministerial construction methods, 15 utility model patents, 3 invention patents, and 2 soft works.

 The Kafue Gorge Lower Hpp Project is the "No. 1 Project" of China-Zambia cooperation and a model project of the "Belt and Road Initiative". After the construction of the hydropower station is completed, it will increase Zambia's existing electricity by 38%, meeting Zambia's electricity demand in the next 5-10 years. The project is located 90 kilometers southeast of the capital Lusaka. The dam is a roller compacted concrete gravity dam with a height of 130.5 meters and a crest length of 374.5 meters. The total volume of concrete is 1.3 million cubic meters. The maximum storage height is 129 meters and the maximum storage capacity is 84 million cubic meters, the total installed capacity of the five generating units is 750 megawatts, and the water storage will begin on November 10, 2020, and the first generating unit will be put into operation on July 1, 2021.
